Candy Corn Mittens

While mittens might look complicated, they surely don’t have to be.  So, contrary to what you may have been led to believe, mittens do not have to be knitted on multiple needles.  In fact, it is quite a straight forward process to knit mittens on regular knitting needles and be just as successful.

These sweet little mittens have a ribbed cuff and are worked flat with a simple sewn seam to finish.  Perfect for anybody a little intimidated about working with double pointed needles.

This pattern is sized for kids approximately ages 5 to 8.  You can adjust for the length of the thumb, and the length of the palm as you go if you wish.  However, this pattern has the size adjustments for toddlers ( ages 2-4) and big big kids (ages 9-14) available as a printable pdf in The Pattern Shop.  Also, the cuff is worked in a 2×2 rib, which gives it that ability to stretch and be a comfy cuff.

Knit Dishcloth

Dishcloths are great beginner projects because they work up quickly, and provide something useful as the finished product – which in turn can be extremely satisfying to use or to gift.  They also make great projects for advanced knitters, because you can make them up en mass, and stockpile for gift giving.  This pattern is done in a pretty simple broken rib type of pattern, giving it great texture for scrubbing.  The 100% cotton makes it extra friendly as well.

DIY Luxurious Bath Mat

More from the cotton front – this luxurious bamboo stitch bath mat.  This Bath Mat features an easy but still fun bamboo stitch, 100% cotton yarn, and is perfect for any season knitting, and of course gift giving!

Now don’t be alarmed by the term bamboo stitch, after all, it’s all just knits and purls.  In the bamboo stitch pattern, we’ve just thrown in a few yarn overs to give that unique texture, and a richer fabric.

Bamboo Stitch Bath Mat

Yes, I’m still indulging in all of that fabulous cotton yarn out there, and still finding new ways to use it in the house. I have been creating cloth after cloth, and now it’s time to broaden our horizons a little bit and to move on to this luxurious bath mat.

Bath mats being smaller than blankets, yet larger than cloths are a pretty good transition project. This knitting pattern, in particular, allows you to experiment with a new stitch, and still enjoy the satisfaction of finishing a project. Using two strands together, this project is relatively quick to finish, yet challenging enough to enjoy. This is the pattern is going to be first on your list of stitches to experiment with.

Materials

YO = yarn over = Bring the yarn forward between the needles, then back over the top of the right needle, so that it is now in the correct position to knit the next stitch.  This is a way of increasing stitches, and create a hole in the fabric.  They are usually paired with decrease in lace patterns (YO)

Pass 1st st. over = pass first stitch over = This is the corresponding decrease in this pattern, where you will pass the stitch created by the yarn over, over the two stitches that are worked immediately after the yarn over.  Using your left needle, lift the YO over the two stitches you just knit, and off the needle.  (Pass 1st st. over)

Heart Shaped Throw Pillow

Using giant needles, and double stranded yarn ( two strands of yarn held together throughout) this knit throw pillow works up really fast.  The increases and decreases handle all of the shaping – and once you’re done, stuff it with your preferred pillow or toy stuffing material. I pretty much always use a polyester fiberfill, or cotton batting, because well, it’s washable. I like to wash things.

M1L:

Sl1, K1, PSSO = Slip 1, Knit 1, Pass Slipped Stitch Over – a decrease, used when you want to have your decreases slant to the left.  Using this decrease on the left side, and the K2tog decrease on the right side gives your project an even, or more finished look. Please note that you could also use the K2tog decrease in place of the Sl1, K1, PSSO decrease if you are more confident. (Sl1, K1, PSSO)

Heart Shaped Throw Pillow Assembly Instructions

Place hearts, right sides together, and stitch around the outside of the hearts, leaving a gap ( large enough to fit the stuffing in).  I started about halfway up the side, went around the top and came halfway down the other side.

Turn the shell right side out, and stuff the pillow – not too full, and finished sewing the remainder of the seam.  Weave in any ends.

DIY this knit throw pillow a gazillion times, and in every colour, and add them to every reading nook and child’s room you can find.  Also a great charity project, and stash buster.
